The Ugly Betty Episode 2 - part 2
Amanda then comes over complaining about the smell of the food, but is interrupted by Natalie rushing over, begging to have some proper food. Natalie cracks a joke, to which Amanda responds with an overly fake laugh, but gets ignored by Natalie as she joins the other “normal” people at Betty’s table, while chatting to them. We focus on Amanda glaring evilly at the back of Betty’s head.
We cut to Wilhelmina and the surgically wrapped woman in their dark room, looking through newspaper clippings. The masked woman remarks that its strange being on the other side, with everyone believing you’ve died. They discuss the fact that Bradford appears to be behind the car crash, but they need to get evidence. They also discuss having to get rid of Daniel, so that he’s not able to take over the company in Bradford’s absence. Wilhelmina and Fey say that to get to Bradford they will have to use Daniel.
We cut to Bradford and his lackey on a park bench. The lackey shows Bradford a magazine page containing an advert for the sale of Fey Sommers Estate. Bradford confirms that he doesn’t hate Fey Sommers, and has a key to her house. He intends to break into her property, and remove any incriminating evidence.
Back at the Mode building after dark. Betty receives an email with a picture of her bunny hanging in a noose with it’s eyes crossed out with black tape. The picture visibly disturbs Betty as Marc comes over with The Book. Marc insists on giving it to Daniel himself. Marc places The Book on Daniels desk, with a brief comment from Wilhelmina in an attempt to sidetrack Daniel from the pictures of Natalie. As he starts to look through it Amanda enters, and asks him to go to the opera with her. Daniel decides to go, leaving The Book on his desk, stating it can wait until the morning.
Daniel and Amanda walk past Betty’s desk, and Amanda tells her to keep working
Betty goes into Daniel’s office and notices The Book still sitting on his desk, after attempting to phone him and getting no answer, she decides to take The Book home for safe keeping overnight.
We cut to Betty’s house, a telenovela being shown on the TV screen. Betty talks to her father, as he watches. They discuss Natalie Whitman briefly. Betty then reveals that she has bought The Book home, to be greeted by squeals from Justin, as he paws over it excitedly.
Betty: Justin, how do you even know what the book is?
Justin: I saw Prada like, seven times.
They find Betty’s name on the masthead, but it’s incorrectly spelt. Hilda arrives home from work, and passes Betty a present from Walter – a packet of 9volt batteries. Betty looks suitably unimpressed. Hilda tells Betty to give Walter some slack, as he didn’t stand a chance once Gina got her claws into him. Justin then notices that the photo’s of Natalie Whitman have not been touched up. There is a knock at the door, and the neighbour, Gina comes barging into the house, asking for $4000 to replace her flat screen that Betty broke. Gina threatens Betty, which causes Hilda to start fighting with her, and threatening her with The Book. Betty tries to rescue The Book from Hilda’s grasp, telling her to be careful. Gina notices the folder, and the words “Important and Confidential” written on the front. After a finale threat, and calculating looks Gina leaves.
We then cut to Bradford using his key to enter Fey Sommers apartment, and looking around. This is transposed with Gina breaking into Betty’s house. We she Bradford look at, and take a photo of him and Fey together when they were younger. Gina looks around, and finally spots The Book lying on the coffee table, but is alarmed to find Justin asleep on the sofa beside it. Bradford picks up a musical box, and after listening to its tune for a moment, he places it in his bag. As Justin rolls over, his back to Gina, she picks up The Book.
We cut to the following morning, and Betty wandering downstairs still in her pyjamas. The notes that The Book is missing, and we cut to her scrabbling through the bin looking for it, in a panicked state. Betty’s father and Hilda come into the room.
Hilda: You lost it?
Betty: No, I didn’t lose it, it’s just in a place I don’t know about.
Betty continues to search, along with the help of her family. Hilda finds a ransom note under the door stating that Gina has The Book, and will return it for a flat screen TV.
We cut to Daniels apartment, where we see Amanda coming out of the bathroom, as Daniel checks the messages on his phone.
Amanda: Oh my God, if that showerhead could pay my bills, I would marry it!
Daniel gets irate when he finds the message from Betty letting him know she took The Book home.
Daniel phones Betty’s house, and the perspective changes from Daniel to Betty as Hilda tells her to lie, and they will get The Book back somehow. Daniel questions Betty on the book, and her reasoning for taking it, and she confirms that the book is totally safe, while being prompted by Hilda. Betty then comments to Daniel that she thinks it’s very brave that he used the original Natalie Whitman photos. Daniel freaks out that the unre-touched photos are in the mock-up, and says he’ll send a car right over to pick up the book. They finish their conversation and Betty states that she is in big trouble.
Ignacio and Hilda come through, discussing the fact that Gina stole The Book.
Ignacio: Hilda just told me that Gina Gambaro just stole your book. Gimme the phone, I’m calling her parents.
Betty refuses Ignacio and Hilda’s offers of help, and says that she can fight her own battles, as she is an adult.
We then cut to Betty’s face squashed through a gap, under a door safety chain, begging. Gina says she wants her $4000 before she’ll give the book back, and threatens to rip it up.
Hilda comes through the back door, and starts a fight with Gina. While Hilda and Gina fight, getting their jewellery caught in each other’s hair, Betty hunts around the front room attempting to find The Book. The car horn beeps, signalling that the car Daniel sent has arrived, and the two girls separate but Hilda takes a large chunk of Gina’s hair with her.
We cut to Mode, with Daniel arriving and entering the elevator. Wilhelmina’s voice in the distance asks him to hold the elevator, he responds by hitting his floor button in an attempt to not hold the elevator. Wilhelmina manages to squeeze in through the door, and asks Daniel about The Book and whether he has had a chance to look at it yet. Daniel schedules a meeting for 10, and then comments on the fact that the unretouched photos were left in the mock up, as well as disappointing Wilhelmina; he also manages to insult her.
Daniel: You’re probably just reaching that age where you have to worry about glasses, ( stage whisper) It happens to everyone!
With that parting comment Daniel leaves the elevator, and we cut to Christina in the closet.
Christina is on the phone to Betty’s who is explaining about the book, and the location of it. Betty reveals that she doesn’t like lying at Mode, and feels that she will probably get fired, and she feels like she doesn’t fit in. Christina tries to boost her confidence. Betty also finds another photo of her bunny all taped up.
Meanwhile the driver has overheard the conversation, and sent a message to Wilhelmina, letting her know the current situation with The Book.
We cut to Daniel’s office, and see him pacing up and down waiting for Betty’s arrival. He can see all the board members sitting in the meeting room waiting for him. Amanda comes in to deliver the message that they are still waiting for him. He stalls the meeting, and then spots Betty arriving.
Betty reveals he truth to Daniel about The Book, and Daniel berates her for lying to him.
Betty: Yeah, I lied. Or I twisted the truth to try and buy some time and fix it.
Daniel: Betty, you don’t lie to me, ever. We’re on the same team.
Daniel then tries to explain that the magazine is screwed because the pictures of Natalie are ‘out there’.
Daniel then agrees to pay Gina the money she wants, so that they can get The Book back, and says that he and betty are off to Queens. Betty reminds him that people are still waiting for him in the meeting.
Daniel goes to the meeting, and Wilhelmina quizzes him on the location of The Book, to which he states it is in his office, and that he hasn’t quite finished with it yet. He then asks them all to come back in three hours.
Daniel: It’s great to see everyone, Jeff – how’s the wife?
Jeff: We’re separating
Daniel: Great to hear it.
As Betty comes out of Daniels office, she finds another picture of her bunny taped to her chair – the bunny has been stuffed down a toilet. Betty climbs on a chair, and shouts at the office about the situation, realising that most of them actually find it funny, and don’t care about her feelings. She tells them all that she cannot be broken that easily.
Betty: You can take my bunny, but you can’t take my spirit.
Daniel then calls Betty away, and they make their way towards Queens.
Cut to Queens and Gina opens her front door, checking out Daniel as he stands there. Daniel asks Gina for the book, and drags Betty to his side. Gina moves to one side, and they can see Walter putting up a television in Gina’s front room. Gina tells Betty and Daniel that someone else came and got the book earlier, and gave her the money for a new TV. Gina describes the person she gave the book to.
Meanwhile Walter tells Betty that he is only there on a professional visit, to install the TV. Betty tells Walter that she doesn’t care. Then he asks her whether she got his gift, and she tries to blow him off with a comment about them coming in useful during hurricane season. Walter then explains their relevance – When they first started dating she popped by his workplace where he was doing shipping and receiving on 9v batteries, and they had their first kiss there. Betty smiles as she recalls the moment.
Daniel comes over to Betty and Walter tries to act all cool, while Daniel ignores him, and pulls Betty to one side to talk about the current situation. Walter turns to the television, which connects to Fashion TV giving a report that unretouched photos of Natalie Whitman have been lost by Mode. Daniel and Betty grimace during the TV report.
Fashion TV Presenter: Remember, We only make others feel bad to make you feel good.
As the report finishes with a promise to show the pictures as soon as they appear Daniel and Betty stare at the TV in horror.
Cut to Wilhelmina’s office, where she is talking on the phone, making sure Daniel is the only one implicated in the situation. Marc comes into the office in a big, very baggy tracksuit and large sunglasses. He reveals The Book hidden underneath the tracksuit top. Wilhelmina confirms she will not be leaking the pictures, just let the rumours circulate, and once everyone is truly worried, she’ll swoop in with the missing proofs, and become a hero.
Back at Queens Daniel and Betty sit in the back of his car driving around. Daniel tries to think of excuses, or a way of running away from the situation, by going to Rio, and drinking. Betty suggests that Daniel tell the truth, and then she says he can just blame her. Daniel then tells the driver to take them back to the Meade building. Betty looks at him nervously.
Back at the Mode meeting room, we see Natalie’s agent pacing around, getting angry, while Natalie sits dejected at the table. Daniel sits at the other end of the table, apologising, but getting cut down by the agent. Daniel doesn’t name names when asked what happens, and Natalie continues to try to calm her agent when he gets irate about the seeming lack of response to finding the photos. As the agent and Natalie talk about coming up with a solution to the situation Daniel notices Betty looking through the window of the meeting room, before she walks slowly to her desk, only to find Amanda sitting there.
Amanda suggests to Betty that instead of being fired, and living through that shame that she should quit instead. Amanda hands Betty her box of possessions including a shredded Bunny sitting on top.
Betty rushes towards the lift, only to find herself inside with Natalie Whitman, who remembers her as the empanada girl. Natalie asks if Betty is moving offices, and is surprised to find she’s quitting. Betty admits to Natalie that it was her fault the pictures have gone missing. Betty apologises for screwing up, but tells Natalie that she really liked the unretouched photos.
Cut to Daniel in his office explaining the situation to Bradford Meade. Daniel takes the full blame of the situation saying that he left the book out of his possession. Daniel impresses Bradford with his honesty. Their meeting is cut short when Natalie comes barging in with a solution to the picture mess. She tells Daniel not to fire Betty.
We cut to Wilhelmina’s office, and she is sitting flicking through a magazine and after checking the time, she asks Marc to put her through to Bradford. She tells Bradford that The Book and the proofs have turned up. Bradford tells her it doesn’t matter, and she should watch the report on Fashion TV. Marc hurriedly turns on the TV, and we are informed by the female presenter that Natalie has decided to pre-empt any bad publicity from the photo’s by giving Mode the rights to publish her photo’s untouched.
Daniel appears in Wilhelmina’s office door, to gloat about the good news. Daniel collects the “anonymously dropped off” Book, and wishes Wilhelmina a good night.
We cut back to Betty’s desk, where she is busy typing away again, her tacky possessions all back in place. Christina bring s a sewn up, and repaired Bunny for Betty, and also hands her a bag that Betty takes into Daniel. Daniel shows her the corrected masthead, with her name spelt correctly. Daniel says that he bought himself another day to go through The Book properly. Betty hands him the bag, containing a pair of American made comfortable dress shoes. Daniel tells Betty that she can go home now, as he is going to be in the office a while longer.
As Betty leaves, she lets Amanda know that it’s going to take a lot more than what Amanda’s done to get rid of her from Mode.
Amanda:Whatever, I’m still prettier.
Daniel is sitting in his office when he receives a phone call from a mysterious voice telling him to be wary, as his father has lots of secrets. The person making the call is the mysterious masked lady. She warns Daniel that his father is capable of anything.
We cut away to see a photograph of Bradford and Fey sitting together being burnt as Bradford watched, the music box sitting in his hands.
